There is good news and bad news for stores if it does. We also don’t know if the split we see between books of narrative reading and other books will continue. There is no comparable subtraction of competition available in the future.Īnd while the migration to digital, as measured by what we can glean about what percentage of the publishers’ sales are ebooks, has slowed, we don’t know if that’s temporary. That took something like 400 big competitor locations out of the market. Is that realistic?Īmong the developments of the last five years has been the shuttering of Borders. That calculates to net closings at about triple the recent rate. The second one is “how likely is Klipper’s forecast to be right?” They had a net reduction of 5% of the stores in the past five years and he’s suggesting a further 30% reduction over the next ten. Even if BN.com keeps some of that business away from, it doesn’t help support a physical store of B&N’s or anybody else’s. Every time a store closes, online purchasing becomes the more convenient option left for some of its customers. Anecdata and intuition suggest that sales of print in stores have fallen more than that. Trachtenberg reports that sales of print books (as reported by BookScan) have declined 22% since 2008. But publishers know that shelf space at B&N has contracted considerably more than that, as space in the stores that used to be devoted to books now merchandises NOOK devices and a variety of non-book items. That’s a five percent reduction in locations. The piece reports that B&N peaked with 726 stores in 2008, which means a net reduction of 37 stores in the past five years. The first one is to please tell me how much shelf space for books will diminish, not just how many stores will be closed. That question jumps past what I think are the first two questions the WSJ story begs. On Tuesday, I got a call from a reporter who started out by asking me, in effect, “how will publishers manage with 200 fewer B&N stores in 10 years?” The college stores are, along with the NOOK device, BN.com, and the ebook business, part of “NOOK Media” which took recent investment stakes from Microsoft and Pearson.Īs usual, Cader’s overview is a helpful summation of the facts. In addition, the chain operates 674 college stores. Trachtenberg reports that the chain had 689 locations operating as of January 23. Klipper was quoted as saying that “in 10 years”, the chain would have “450 to 500 stores”. Klipper suggested only a gentle acceleration of what has been the pace of contraction for the past couple of years far into the future. On Monday, the Wall Street Journal published a story by Jeffrey Trachtenberg quoting Barnes & Noble’s retail group CEO Mitch Klipper on the company’s plans for shrinking its store footprint over the next decade.

We also gave bonus points to the online backup services that let you mail in a hard drive full of data to start the process as well as those that send you a hard drive to restore your data. Upload speed also matters even though you only do your initial backup once, it can take days or even weeks if it’s several hundred gigabytes. How we test the best cloud backup services And Carbonite's appealing mobile apps are no longer available, with the company giving no timetable for their return. Multiple machines are supported on a single account, but there's no volume discount - each additional machine costs as much as the first. To get those functions, you'll have to trade up to the Plus or Premium plans, which have features similar to IDrive or Backblaze's basic plans but cost much more. (Carbonite has temporarily slashed prices by 30%, bringing costs a bit closer to those of its rivals.) It also has an intuitive user interface that shows you which files have been fully, partly or not backed up.īut you'd better read the fine print, as Carbonite doesn't automatically back up large files, external drives, or any kind of video file on its Basic pricing tier. CrashPlan for Small Business also consumes a fair amount of system resources during backups, but you can adjust the application settings to reduce that. The mobile apps have great security but are pretty bare-bones. What you won't get are the consumer-friendly features that made CrashPlan for Home so appealing, such as drive shipping and mobile-device backups. And you get unlimited backup space for unlimited devices as long as you're willing to pay $10 per month per computer. CrashPlan supports full-drive-image backups to local drives and backs up Linux/macOS-formatted networked drives. Its plan for small businesses retains that service's very fast upload and download speeds, and adds business-friendly features such as support for Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux and unlimited (if you want) retention of old versions of files.Īlmost everything is customizable, including frequency of backups, retention of deleted files, account security and where to download restored files. Even with one of the best external hard drives hooked up to your computer or as a stand-alone backup device on your home network, it could still be stolen or damaged in a flood or fire, leaving you with nothing. I am happy to say yes to both of the questions. One of my questions was if my computer programming cable & software (Win500) for my Grecom PS600 would work on this unit. A few of the questions I ask the RS sales personal they couldn't answer. Many Police departments have rejected encryption for now. There seems to be problems with digital radio that so far has been a real issue when encryption is used. I highly recommend the RadioShack Pro-106 until the police start to encrypt all communications, that is if they do. The rubber duck antenna supplied is just adequate. I have the Antennacraft ST-2 and it works great with the Pro 106. The Pro 106 seems to have far better audio than the Uniden units I have used including the newest versions.Ī good scanner antenna is also needed. So I recommend the Pro-106 for now as you will have to mess with the Uniden scanners anyways. But that type of programming is not complete. The Uniden units just need you to enter your zip code and then it is ready. Compared to the Uniden units with pre-programmed software, the RadioShack Pr0-106 is a lot harder to program. Software available makes programming fairly easy but does require some learning in order to make it happen. Programming will require learning about trunking, talkgroups, and objects. AP-25 II is slowly gaining ground and will be more predominant as cities and states upgrade their radios. Not sure if firmware updates in the future will allow for AP-25 II monitoring. Better audio than the Uniden scanners I have used including the newest Unidens.ĪP-25 is the first version only on this scanner. The scanner is fast with great audio quality. The most recent firmware update as of Augis the 2.1 which corrects scanner programming errors in the marine VHF and UHF frequencies. The RadioShack USB to scanner cable is about $40 and is a must have for computer monitoring and programming. The scanner is great but you do need to learn how to program it. All software and accessories will work with either scanner as they are the same. This model was originally made by GRE but the factory was shut down.so Whistler bought the rights and now manufacture the very same scanner and re-named it the Pro 651.
